Interesting Vs. Boring Classes
I thought that the most interesting topic we have talked about
is impression management. I found this discussion one that was very interesting.
The part that I found most entertaining was when everyone agreed that we have
different personalities depending upon which platform we are on. For example,
most of the class agreed that the way they act on Facebook is not the same way
they act on Twitter. I felt like our class was on the same page for most of the
discussion, which made it enjoyable to hear all the different points people were
making about how people act on social media vs. real life. The picture that I included
on this post relates to this topic. It shows a person holding up four different
masks and typing on a key board. Depending on who he interacts with online,
depends which “mask” he puts on. This is what I think of when I hear the term
impression management.
Another class that I enjoyed was the one where we had the skype
guest speaker. She was so inspirational and had so many great tips to share
with us. The confidence she had in herself and her work was very evident to me.
She seemed very real when she was giving tips and ideas to the class. I see blogging
as a very tough career path. A career path requiring a creative and intelligent
person, especially if you want to be successful in the field. She has both of
those qualities and having her share tips with the class was very influential.
The most boring concept that we have talked about in my opinion
was the day we discussed the construction of social media. I did not enjoy this
unit as much as some of the other units. I felt like it was harder material to
understand. I had a hard time relating these terms to social media. Eventually,
I did understand, but it took a couple times of you and people in the class explaining
these terms for me to have a clear understanding. The terms that I had a harder
time understanding were Governance and Ownership.
The material that I have been learning will help me in the
future of the real world because it is giving me a deeper understanding of
social media. I feel like I have a better understanding of social media as a
whole and where each platform came from. Seeing web 1.0 and comparing it to web
2.0 was a time in class when I saw a clear progression of social media and the
internet over time. Before this class I did not have a clear understanding of
either web 1.0 or 2.0. Social media plays a very important role in this day and
age. Being able to understand all the different details that this class goes
over, is making me a more well-rounded social media user.
