Attempts to go Viral on Twitter!!

My group made a video on different Mount traditions that each of us and our friends around campus enjoyed the most. The point of the assignment was to make the video go viral and see how many retweets and favorites you could get on your video. My groups tactic to get retweets was to inform all of our friends and followers about the assignment and then kindly ask them to retweet and favorite the tweet. This worked well for us. Although we only lost by a small difference in comparison to another group, I was impressed with the amount of tweets we were able t get in such a short time period. I think that if you have the right connections on a social media platform with someone who has thousands of followers, it makes it easier to get favorites and retweets.
The process of creating the video was a little bit tricky. We wanted a video that would allow for people all around campus to enjoy and connect to what was being said. The main thought that we had in mind while creating this video was to please our audience and make it appealing enough for them to want to retweet or favorite. We decided that talking about Mount traditions would be a fun way to engage users. We each thought of our own favorite traditions and then asked two random people on campus as well. After we created the video we posted it on twitter as soon as Dr. K approved of it. That is when all the work started. My group and I told all our different friends, coworkers, followers, classmates, family, and basically anyone who could give us a retweet/favorite about the video we created.
If I were able to redo this assignment, there is only one thing I would do differently. That one thing would be, quoting the tweet first and explaining to my followers the importance of favorting/retweeting the tweet. I think since there was no clear explanation along with the tweet when I retweeted, it didn’t allow for my followers to understand the importance of retweeting and favorting my tweet. Since I have never tried to make a tweet go viral before, it was an interesting experience to learn from. Completing this assignment in a fixed amount of time was a challenge, but it allowed for me to see a glimpse of the real world and the dead lines that I will have to face in the business world.
One of the biggest lessons I learned about this project was how powerful word of mouth is. I texted people that I haven’t talked to in a while and asked them to help me out, and without hesitation they favorited and retweeted the tweet. At one point, I went around in some of my classes asking everyone to retweet it. Kawasaki and Fitzpatrick mentioned having an appeal to users and making the post pull the user in. We tried out best to have the post be appealing to all mount students, professors, teams, families and alumni. This project opened my eyes to how hard it is to market on social media. My group got in total around 100 favorites/retweets and we struggled to get that amount. Twitter is very luck of the draw with the tweets that end up going viral. It is all about having the right people retweet your tweet.
